Welcome to the ramblings of a

Zimbabwean Woman !

3rd June 2000

The countdown to the General Elections in Zimbabwe has begun. On the 24th and 25th June, this country of mine will go the polls, and decide my future. The clock is ticking away - am I sitting on a time-bomb ? I'm beginning to think so (along with many others in this country).

Hundreds of families, black and white, have already left for greener pastures in the last two months. The die-hards keep saying "Stick it out - it could all come right !" Who are they trying to kid ? Do I believe them, stick it out and THEN lose everything ? Or do I leave now and lose everything ? To stay or not to stay - that is the question, and it is a question facing so many of the white population here in Zimbabwe.

I am not going to bore you on these pages with the history of Rhodesia, nor the last twenty years in the history of Zimbabwe. I think most people know all that. I am not a historian, politician, journalist, farmer or business owner. I am some-one's wife, mother and grandmother. I work for a living. I am white - not the colour of the day - and everything I own is tied up in this country.

Over the last three months, I and many others, have watched in growing disbelief as an ongoing horror story of abuse and intimidation has evolved. Day after day I have said to myself, "This can't be happening ! People should not be subjected to what is going on. Somebody will stop the madness and intervene." But, guess what ? NO ONE HAS COME TO HELP US. THERE HAS BEEN NO INTERVENTION - NOTHING BUT WORDS AND SLAPS ON THE HAND ! I have been a witness, first and second hand, to the most horrifying set of events, which will culminate in the visit to the polls on election day. Will the horror stop there ? Who can tell ? I am beginning to doubt it. So, you won't get a history lesson - you'll get a running documentary as each day unfolds. And you'll get it from my point of view, and how it is affecting me, personally, in my everyday life. Please take the time to read the pages in this site. Then, if you will, email me with your comments and suggestions.

We are facing one of the hardest decisions in our lives right now.

I will be updating the NEWS page of this site on a daily basis as we draw nearer to the elections. If you would like to follow my story as it unfolds, please check back to see what is happening. I aim to give not only facts, but also my feelings as the time draws nearer. A lot of us are downhearted and discouraged, but for some, there may be light at the end of the tunnel. For us, it may be somewhere else. It's almost time to decide.
