The Pit Structures

The photos below show a reconstruction of pit structures found all over the Nyanga area.

They are stone ruins, believed to have been established by an agricultural people of remarkable

sophistication. I found them fascinating. Whoever the builders were, there are stone ruins over an

amazingly large area. They built irrigation channels, fed by the mountain streams, and planted

their crops in terraced fields. The outlines are still clearly visible on the mountains slopes.

Many archaeologists and sociologists believe these pits were used as cattle pens.

The photo directly below shows the entrance to the pit area. It is actually a very small entrance.

I am short ! and found it difficult to get in ! There is a trapdoor leading to the area above it

(covered by the large thatch).

The photo below shows the pit itself. It is believed that animals were kept in the pits.
