The
Pit Structures
The photos below show a reconstruction of pit structures
found all over the Nyanga area. They are stone ruins, believed to have been established
by an agricultural people of remarkable sophistication. I found them fascinating. Whoever the
builders were, there are stone ruins over an amazingly large area. They built irrigation channels,
fed by the mountain streams, and planted their crops in terraced fields. The outlines are still
clearly visible on the mountains slopes. Many archaeologists and sociologists believe these pits
were used as cattle pens. The photo directly below shows the entrance to the pit
area. It is actually a very small entrance. I am short ! and found it difficult to get in ! There
is a trapdoor leading to the area above it (covered by the large thatch).
The photo below shows the pit itself. It is believed
that animals were kept in the pits.
