Mermaids Pool is about 20 minutes from Harare
on the Shamva Road.

In the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s it was
such a popular picnic spot that it
was hard to find a space to sit down !
Today we were the only family there,
and then at about 2pm we were joined by
another group of picnickers !

The object of the day (according to the
teenagers) is to walk to the top of the rock
slide, come down on the tube, and then
repeat the whole process – continually !!
We all had great fun. Even some of the
“old fogies” had a go ! When I was 16 you
you couldn’t have stopped me – today I
watched the others ! Ah…well !

The area is no longer maintained as it
used to be (beautiful lawns, flower beds etc)
and so it has returned to it’s natural
state – which I think is far more beautiful !

The empty shell of what used to be the bar
& restaurant area.

Two of the “old folk” having a go !
