Intimidation

Intimidation - I don't know what the dictionary defines it as. But I know what it feels like.

It's when you are afraid to say too much, or let it be known that you agree with one thing and not another, for fear of reprisal.

It's when you have to keep watching your back, to see who's driving behind you.

It's when you're wondering if you should leave the country over the election period, in case there's trouble.

It's when you have to take down posters at work, in case some-one (you don't know who) should misunderstand why you put them there, and target your workplace.

It's when you daren't speak your mind on the telephone, in case someone's listening in, and will be able to track you down.

It's when you attend Government rallies, and dance and sing with the best of them, because you're too afraid to do anything else.

It's when you have to leave your farm, your pets, your labourers, your possessions, at the mercy of others, because you are afraid for the lives of your family.

It's when you get beaten up for selling an Independent newspaper, instead of the state owned paper.

It's when you dare not wear a white t-shirt, in case you are mistaken for an opposition supporter.

It's when you dare not wave with an open hand - that's the symbol of the opposition.

I could go on forever - but I won't. Instead I will be updating the pages of this site daily with stories of the intimidation of others - true stories, told to me by the people concerned. I will NOT print hearsay, or rumours, but the actual happenings. I can't name anyone - intimidation - they could be killed for it.
