About Me

I've been meaning to revise this section for quite a while now. It's no longer the case that I am and am not a writer. I am a writer for real and I'm not afraid to tell you that. I'm also a professional writer although I write for free on this site. Those last few sentences took a long time to become reality but they are no less true for the fact. I'm also a husband and I'm helping bring up two cats with my wife. Life is good and complicated but that's not really a contradiction.

The journal is one way to get to know me. I don't hold much back that isn't plainly someone else's business. The problem with online journals seems to be that people believe they are a window into the writer's soul. It's probably better to think of each entry as a snapshot of my life. Everything in the picture is as accurate as I can make it yet I'm very aware of what does and doesn't make it into the frame.

I also have an invisible disability known as an Arnold Chiari Malformation (or ACM for short). As much as I would prefer it otherwise, that disability is a major part of who I am. That disability does not give me the energy to write every day like many famous books on writing insist. In fact, I am attempting to work on a life plan that takes disability and writing ability into account. I'd like to think it would sit on a shelf somewhere with famous books on writing but I'd rather not have time to put it in book form. If I did, I'd call it "The Chiarian Writer's Life." When I'm all finished, my life will have changed in some way so that the original ideas no longer fit. That's life and someone will get something out of it. My journal depicts some of what it is like to live with a disabling condition but I would encourage you to follow the links I will be providing below. In addition, I am willing to answer most email questions you may have. Raising awareness is all I can do right now.

About This Site

I don't know about the rest of you but I like to blather about a lot of things. Sometimes, there's a particular topic of interest that can hold my attention for weeks. Other times, I'll write about my life in general. In case you care, the title is based on a pretty obscure joke from "The Princess Bride." Miracle Max claimed that Wesley said "to blathe, meaning to bluff" when he asked why Wesley was too stubborn to die. I like the concept of blathing but it comes closer to blathering for me. Somedays, I think I do a damn fine job writing here and other days it's just blah. Therefore, you get "Blahthings" out of "blah blatherings" and the "th" is pronounced like it is in "the." I blathe therefore I am. No, I don't like to take myself seriously.
